Scoreless tie 'learning experience' for Central, Warde boys soccer teams

BRIDGEPORT -- The learning curve for the Central and Fairfield Warde boys soccer teams was slightly steeper in their season opener Wednesday night.

The Mustangs and Hilltoppers both suffered significant losses from squads that went deep into state tournament play. Because of this, neither side could muster a goal in a 0-0 draw at Kennedy Stadium.

"Both teams are looking for progress," Warde coach Justin Ottavio said. "Both programs lost a lot, it was an opportunity for each team to get a learning experience."

Warde outshot Central 8-7 in the contest. Mustangs goalkeeper Dave DiSilvestro stopped four shots, as did his counterpart, Jesus Barragan.

The task was more arduous for the Hilltoppers, who lost nine seniors from the squad that reached the Class LL semifinals a year ago, then nine more starters who were ruled academically ineligible because of new rules in the school district, according to Central coach Jay Silverman.

"We got hurt by a new policy that came into play," Silverman said. "The kids stepped up and played an amazing game. We really didn't expect the outcome that we got."

The Mustangs controlled the better chances in the second half with senior captain Sal Siciliano heading a pair of corner kick crosses high and wide. Sophomore fullback Michael Foley was also stopped on a header by Barragan.

"Our second half play increased," Ottavio said. "We created more chances. We had a couple of opportunities, we were just unlucky."

Central's Mikefedly Jean had the Hilltoppers' best second-half chance as his shot got past DiSilvestro, but Foley was there for Warde to kick the ball out of harm's way.

"We've got kids with very little experience playing," Silverman said. "I hope this is the start of something for us."
